Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle, the official capital of Finnish Lapland and the gateway to the aurora season that runs from late August to early April. Reached by FFGR Jets in one hour fifteen from Helsinki, the city was rebuilt to Alvar Aalto's reindeer-antler street plan after the war. FFGR Finland coordinates glass-igloo and treehouse stays for aurora viewing, private snowmobile and husky expeditions, reindeer-sleigh evenings with Sámi hosts, and the Santa Claus Village at the Circle line itself. The Arktikum museum, half-buried beneath a glass tube reaching toward the Ounasjoki river, is the finest interpretation of Arctic culture in the Nordic countries. Summer brings the midnight sun, river cruises and gold-panning in the surrounding wilderness.
