Hämeenlinna
Sibelius's birthplace — medieval castle on Lake Vanajavesi.
— Trajet —
1 h from Helsinki
Hämeenlinna, an hour north of Helsinki on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi, is the birthplace of Jean Sibelius and the seat of one of Finland's oldest medieval castles, Häme Castle, founded in the thirteenth century. FFGR Finland coordinates visits to the Sibelius childhood home and the Aulanko nature reserve, a romantic landscaped park with a granite observation tower above the lake. Lakeside dining and the surrounding Tavastia manor country make it a refined day-loop from the capital, combining music heritage, medieval architecture and the gentle southern lake scenery.
